North Central Indiana WIRED
North Central Indiana WIRED is committed to leveraging its mature, experienced workforce as it transitions to high-performance production in manufacturing. The Lifelong Learning System is one initiative aimed at retaining older workers by increasing access to continuing education opportunities. In order to create a system that would be most beneficial to workers and address employers’ needs, NCI WIRED undertook three community-wide surveys to understand perceptions, barriers, and requisites for the new system.

California Innovation Corridor Retrains High-Skilled Engineers
Like much of the country, the California Innovation Corridor is facing a workforce shortage in highly skilled, technical positions as the baby boomers retire. Following the dot com bubble burst, there are a number of dislocated software engineers with strong technical backgrounds that are relatively well-prepared to transition to the aerospace and defense industry. This is a story about how California Innovation Corridor WIRED collaborated with a local university and workforce board to retrain these engineers to meet regional industry demand.

This course is designed as a training tool primarily for administrators and staff who work in the Workforce Investment System or at faith-based and community organizations.

Youth Common Measure: Literacy/Numeracy Gains - A Programmatic Viewpoint (Presentation Slides Zip File)
States and local workforce investment areas continue to face issues with the programmatic (e.g., policies, program implications, service delivery) and technical (collecting data and reporting outcomes) aspects of the Youth Common Measure: Literacy/Numeracy Gains. Following a nationwide survey, specific areas of concern and technical assistance needs were determined. In response to these findings, the Employment and Training Administration (ETA), along with Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. (MPR) and Social Policy Research Associates (SPRA), developed two Webinars for this Youth Common Measure. One Webinar will address the programmatic facet of the measure, including: policies, program implications, service delivery designs, and the measure itself.
Another Webinar will address the technical facet of the measure, including: reporting specifications, software issues, State Management Information System, and reporting methodology. Each Webinar will be presented twice to allow for maximum participation. A Question and Answer period will also be provided during each Webinar. The Technical Webinar will be conducted on July 23, 2008 and repeated on August 27, 2008, and will be presented jointly by ETA and MPR.
The Programmatic Webinar will be held on August 5, 2008 th and repeated on September 4, 2008, and will be presented jointly by ETA and SPRA.

Workforce Solutions Targeted to Employer Needs in Lubbock County Texas
This article describes an employer-driven initiative developed by WorkForce Solutions South Plains (WFS), South Plains College (SPC) and the industry to develop a training initiative that will ultimately prepare a pool of skilled workers in HVAC and building maintenance. The initiative provides an industry recognized certification in these skills that was previously not available.

Appalachian Ohio Gets Connected*
Appalachian Ohio is an expansive rural region comprised of 29 counties and extending 300 miles from one end to the other. Holding meetings was an expensive and logistically problematic endeavor that threatened to reduce the WIRED team’s effectiveness. They decided to hold meetings virtually and since have witnessed attendance and productivity skyrocket.

Regionalism takes root in Mid-Michigan*
Before WIRED, residents of Mid-Michigan would have never claimed to live in a single region. There is no large metro area and no single media outlet that covers the entire region. WIRED Mid-Michigan faced the daunting task of creating a regional identity from scratch and has devised innovative marketing and communications strategies to accomplish this. It appears that the aggressive and evocative communication of information to and among regional stakeholders is catalyzing self-reinforcing regional awareness in Mid-Michigan.

West Michigan identified the flexible workplace as a defining characteristic of many high-growth sectors. They have developed a toolkit for creating remote work sites that can support and attract mobile workers. This toolkit facilitates regional development by providing the means that enable the regional market to develop new regional assets. The project coordinators expect the project’s unique market-based approach to be the key to the model’s success and sustainability.

Summer Camps Aren’t Just for Kids Programs Engage Science Teachers in Research
This article describes summer camps offered to teachers to expose teachers to scientific challenges that many classroom settings cannot provide. Recognizing this exposure as beneficial to both teachers and students, several programs are targeting educators with the goal of enhancing instructional methods in the classroom in order to increase student achievement in the STEM fields. The article describes two university-based, professional development programs for science teachers in Kansas and Ohio.

Metro Denver WIRED Transforms its Governance*
The Metro Denver WIRED Initiative demonstrates how governance structures can remain flexible and be reformed as programs evolve and functional demands change. Metro Denver’s Leadership Council was originally comprised of co-chairs from each of the Initiative’s eight panels representing industry, education, the public workforce system and small business. It was charged with oversight of the data gathering efforts of the eight panels and forming recommendations for transformation of delivery systems for a skilled workforce for four targeted industry clusters – Aerospace, Bioscience, Energy and IT/Software. As Metro Denver WIRED transitioned into the implementation phase, the Leadership Council was restructured as a decision-making body representing all partners and supported by four Solutions Teams.

CVS/Caremark's Career Prescriptions for Success (CAPS)
This article describes the CVS/Caremark Career Prescriptions for Success (CAPS) program. The article describes the program being piloted in five urban sites which uses apprenticeships develop pharmacy occupations and launch participants on a career path.
Apprenticeships can create career ladders and offer businesses a way to train the workers they need and offer workers an avenue to ‘earn while they learn'.
